NB3076 Chief Engineer

Salary:     £45k

Location: Tamworth

Position:  Permanent

The Chief Engineer is to maintain all facilities and equipment in optimum condition whilst actively pursuing a continuous improvement agenda.  The Chief Engineer will ensure successful delivery of projects to full scope, schedule and budget.  Provide medium to long-term management of the engineers.

Chief Engineer to devise and implement an effective departmental strategy and design a robust management control system in order to meet this need. Chief Engineer must have sound background in both electrical and mechanical engineering incl C&G or equivalent to trade test standards.  Experience of minor civil engineering projects desirable

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all (existing and emerging) relevant legislation and regulations with particular consideration given to:
  • Health and Safety including:

Contractors (Permits to work)

                     Risk assessments (including fire risk assessment)

                     Lock off/Tag out

                     Food Safety

                     Local authorities/other external agencies such as utility suppliers

  • Work effectively with all functional heads in order to deliver the site strategy
  • Implement an effective PPM regime with appropriate KPIs
  • Ensure all repairs are carried out with pace and precision in line with business needs.  This will require an excellent working relationship with the Operations team
  • Devise and publish KPIs and relevant reports from the engineering management control system on a daily/weekly/monthly basis
  • Ensure engineering resource is planned and deployed appropriately
  • Ensure the engineering team is appropriately skilled to deliver the engineering agenda through regular and effective 1:1 review, appraisals and training needs analysis
  • Career planning for team, including training plans and recruitment strategies
  • Project management to include critical paths and regular review
  • Develop effective continuous improvement methodologies considering:
  • Benchmarking across the Group and implementing best practice
  • Application of downtime analysis
  • Application of emerging technology as appropriate
  • Revenue budget to 300k
  • Board approved capital projects up to £1m
  • Responsible for Lead Engineer and 5 engineers (all stages discipline/grievance)

Candidate Requirements:

  • Sound background in both electrical and mechanical engineering incl C&G or equivalent to trade test standards.  Experience of minor civil engineering projects desirable
  • Able to originate and manage an effective PPM system through a team of engineers/contractors at optimum cost performance
  • Significant experience of successfully managing multiple projects in FMCG with some complexity and within budget
  • Able to demonstrate success in delivering continuous improvement
  • Confidently engage with customers and senior managers, working collaboratively at a senior level across the group
  • Previous experience in the food industry desirable. Relevant food safety and HACCP training will be provided where appropriate
  • IT literate, able to work confidently with email, word processing, spread sheet and presentation software.  Ability to use CAD, PLC programming and read electrical drawings desirable. Training will be provided where needed.
  • Ability to direct a team whilst working within the wider business objectives
  • Basic engineering Health and Safety management experience and H&S training essential. IOSH qualification or equivalent desirable.  Training will be provided where appropriate.
